STUDIES AND INVESTIGATION ON VERMICOMPOSTING

Meera T. Sose, Sunil J. Kulkarni

Abstract: Vermicomposting is one of the most practiced methods for domestic and household solid waste. Vermicomposting consists of segregation of waste, precomposting, postcomposting and Earthworms addition. In the present investigation performance of an existing vermicomposting plant is analyzed. During performance evaluation of vermicomposting plant, the changes in biophysiochemical parameters were computed. The vermicomposting process requires a moisture content of 30 to 50%. There was visible effect of vermicomposting on the losses of organic content. Also the percentage of organic content decreased during the period of vermicomposting. This implies that the decomposition of waste by worms population. There was decrease in the pH during vermicomposting. The process is most effective between pH ranges 6.4 to 7.6.
