ISOLATION, PARTIAL PURIFICATION OF PROTEINS PRODUCED BY LACTOBACILLUS BIFERMENTANS AND ITS ANTIBACTERIAL PROPERTIES

Abstract: The Antibacterial properties of many Lactic Acid Bacteria were exhaustively studied by many researchers, but little information is known about Lactobacillus bifermentans. This study aims to comprehend the effect of Lactobacillus bifermentans on various Gram Positive and Gram Negative bacteria like Escherichia coli, Bacillus subtilis and Staphylococcus aureus. Testing of antibacterial activity of crude as well as partially purified bacterial sample by Size Exclusion Column Chromatography was performed using Disc Diffusion method, the results of which were comprehended by the measurement of inhibition zones observed. Isolated protein showed antibacterial activity against Bacillus subtilis and Staphylococcus aureus and no effect was observed on Escherichia coli. The inhibition zone diameters obtained were between 8 mm and 12 mm.
